The Success of Black Panther and the New Black Wave

Have you seen Marvel’s newest blockbuster the Black Panther yet? (Don’t worry, I won’t spill all the beans). As of this moment is has taken the entire world by storm! This latest installment in the Marvel movie series is breaking international records and bringing joy to millions! But this film has touched no other group of people like it has the global Black community.

After having a few weeks to digest the film and listen to numerous reviews and thought pieces about the movie, I have finally been able to grasp the importance of this time. I think we are witnessing a cultural force that could be the catalyst into a new consciousness for Black people. Still with me? Ok great, hear me out!

This movie has many layers to learn from when it comes to evolving the culture. Many things stuck out to me that black people need to take heed to. Images dealing with ancestor veneration and herbal medicines are foreign concepts to many modern blacks, but are inherently African. Our traditional spiritual practices are rarely shown on the big screen in such glory! Other subjects such as connecting the Diaspora and cultural customs and initiation rites were also introduced. Many of these things could be introduced into mainstream black culture today and would benefit us immensely.

To see the reception the black community has given to this movie is truly humbling. It is a testament to the spending power and cultural strength of the community. I haven’t seen American black folks this excited since Obama ran for his first term!

The release of this film has shown me that black people are yearning to see themselves in positions of power and greatness. I think this movie will stimulate the creative juices of millions to produce new narratives for Blacks. Gone are the days of the one-dimensional degenerative black image. Afro-futurism is here to stay and will push the limits on what we can achieve as a people if we strive to better ourselves, and the community.

We must continue to ride and build off this wave of creativity, oneness, and self-love! Kudos to the Black Panther cast and crew! We appreciate all of you! #Wakandaforever
