Photography layers

It started with an email. I’m on Sony Square NYC’s mailing list because of having signed up for a previous event. Before the weekend, I received an email to attend Dave Krugman’s Depth & Composition photowalk. I love photoswalks (I host them, too)! I signed up myself and Becca, as this was a rare weekend where we are both in town and available. I didn’t realize, but the nice people at Sony were also offering free gear trials. This was an added bonus!

We arrived right at 11am and missed any type of meet and greet / mingling business. When we arrived, most of the fun gear has already been claimed. I was able to grab an 85mm G master and attached it to my A7 ii and Becca found an A7s ii and the Zeiss 55mm 1.8. I own the Zeiss 55mm and we’re both very familiar with it.

Dave had prepared a brief talk about layers and depth and walked us through some of examples of his own work. Thanks, Dave! It was super helpful to hear your thoughts and how you’re incorporating that into your work.

The next steps were to go shoot. We had the option to go on our own or walk as a group. Looking back on the morning, I do feel bad about not walking with the group. There is value in being able to chat with other photographers and learn from them. However, since I’ve been back in NYC, I can’t get enough of photographing every aspect of it.

I took that as an opportunity to walk around a different neighborhood with a new lens and practice some depth in my shots.

85mm is a new range for me to shoot with, so I had a little bit of a rough start. Keeping in mind, layers, I was focusing (get it?) on shooting things through things.

Ah, right! 85mm is great for portraits.

But then I started getting creative. I tried shooting some shots that I usually wouldn’t have taken.
