How Arnold Schwarzenegger Shifted Gears In His Workouts With Age

Here’s more workout wisdom from Arnold on aging fitness

Yesterday I shared a quote from the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger on one of the biggest mental traps that people get into when they start exercising after a brief (or not-so-brief) vacation from working out.

(This is especially the case if someone used to be in really good shape)

Schwarzenegger went on to share some of the adaptations he’s made to his training:

Focusing on injury prevention is something most people miss. In fact, I shared recently with someone that strength, stamina and functional movement are the cornerstones of a successful fitness program, but most people usually neglect one or more of them.

One thing that happens when someone is finally pushed over the edge to make a change is they sign-up for a gym membership and start hitting the weights. Or they put on an old pair of running shoes and pound the pavement. In their motivation to make a change (and get results NOW), they usually overdo it and are sore for days or worse, they hurt themselves in the process.

I’ve seen this cycle play out too many times to count.

An alternative route is to ease back into it and get back in touch with your body and certain movements. Especially if you haven’t worked out in years (or several birthdays with a zero) often the first step is restore your movement. This is a titanic-sized topic (that I may share in a future MBB), but the essence is start doing exercises to restore mobility and stability (usually core stability). It doesn’t mean you can’t lift weights… cycle or other bodyweight circuits — but if you combine some of these mobility exercises, you will allow your body to move better.

And when you move better, it’s typically easier to move more.

Many people don’t want to take time to do this type of prehab work — but it will pay monthly dividends for your ability to feel your best, move your best and keep training hard.
