Research + Designing Portfolio

Ordered portfolio case

Pick up Chandler and Price Platen Press from Arthur, make sure its good to run and order new rollers — if things are good, order plates and ink to start printing my business cards myself in the next few weeks.

Thesis Project Ideas —

1.***Think of ways to most efficiently organize the space inside a tiny house (since storage is a big issue for tiny houses). This incorporates elements of design to establish practical ways to most effectively use the available space and how to make the most of living tiny without being restricted by lack of personal belongings. The goal of tiny houses in many way could be to avoid large amounts of debt, or free up your life from issue of having too much junk, but also being able to do the things you want in life or even just to live a more simple down to earth lifestyle. In many cases, tiny houses could actually prevent you from doing things like camping, hiking, kayaking or anything similar to that because you have no way to store all the equipment. So in this case, my goal would to be able to solve the problem involving lack of functional storage so that one can effectively live simply in a tiny house without having to get rid of essential equipment for your hobbies. (This is different from getting rid of junk you have been hoarding in your room for ridiculous reasons).

2. Design a series of posters showcasing the different types of tiny houses — tiny houses, trailers, mobile homes, cabins, micro apartments, yurts, RV’s, caravans, campers, row houses… etc. It compares all the different variations but they all have similar functions and goals.

Research should be concluded this week + Brainstorming ways to execute thesis project — based off of one of the three concepts I’ve written above.

Designing Portfolio — making sure I am getting my projects finished to photograph asap, have some mood boards/sketches for thesis project and start to develop some clear ideas/ first pass due next week

Going home this weekend to start building my portfolio book — cherry hardwood, laser engraved logo (1.5 inch tall in bottom right corner — same with portfolio case), make sure I have the correct paper ordered, practice binding for book and order more materials if needed.

Finish designing portfolio book

Hopefully my portfolio case will be here by now so I can start putting my projects in wells and “designing” the inside layout.

…Jolly Pumpkin Hawaiian Time
For my Jolly Pumpkin theme, I wanted to focus on the connection between Michigan where the Brewery is based and Hawaii (which is beloved to the owner Ron Jeffries). I chose 4 different beers that has fruity bases and/or were tied to Hawaii through collaborations. My colors, typeface and illustrations mimic the sunsets, water and sky of the tropics but also keep connected to the rustic feel of the original branding of the brewery.

Paper Assignments: Business cards — Olive Speckletone (100C) and Parcel Wrap Kraft duplexed (100C), Envelope — Parcel Wrap Kraft (100C), Letterhead — True White speckletone (70T)

Printing: Match printed green on envelope and letterhead to the exact green of the Olive Speckletone paper, print all the greens FIRST (on 11x17) on the EPSONS and to create the varnish run through the RICOH (until I can get my business cards letterpress printed) — > RICOH varnish used for envelope and letterhead to match letterpress business cards

Make revisions from Brigette’s critique of business cards, envelope, and letterhead

Make sure I have enough brown French Paper Co. Kraft-tone (that’s the paper I’m using for my personal branding because it warms everything up) (:

Paper tests!

09/20/2017

This is what I heard: I think we established where I should be going for my letterhead — found a simple way to incorporate the triangles without decorating! (: Talk to Lisa and Stephen about printing my business cards and if the two ideas were possible (technical printing issues), like the uniqueness to my envelope layout (custom shape that fits with design of letterhead and business card)

What I think/What I’m going to do: Definitely love where the envelope and business card ideas are going! gonna try a couple different papers to see what I like best, gonna talk to Lisa about “less is more” printing for business cards for the varnish, order green paper samples, experiment with custom envelope options

09/13/2017

This is what I heard: Need to simplify letterhead, narrow down a common theme (since I had so many ideas), try some silhouette illustrations of my fave in watercolor/micron pen to mix with trees, don’t use all caps in my type because there’s no hierarchy, make letterhead smaller, make type a little bigger, my logo design is beautiful and the revisions I did made it even better/legible

What I think/What I’m going to do: Well I definitely need to make the type at least one point size larger because it’s hard to read, definitely happy with the revisions I made for the logo I made over the summer, I am gonna do a couple illustrations to see if I like the silhouette drawing as well as refining my logo design that will fit my letterhead, I’m gonna try a couple more revisions of where to put the information in my letterhead (also have to change my domain name for adobe for my portfolio), I personally like the all caps in my type because it goes with a lot of my previous projects and I write in all caps in notes, critiques and whatnot — But i will try a few examples of mixing them with lowercase, I am gonna experiment with more angles in my type to match my triangle theme, I think if i use just the type and my simple logo design for my resume it will look boring and doesn’t match my personality and looks too sterile.

Class Two: 09/06/2017

*Pick up resume from Brigette to start editing…

Do as many examples of business cards, resume designs and cover letter designs as you can — based off of the inspiration boards I made.

Refine current logo and incorporate my name, and/or supplemental elements.

Locations to look for jobs — Pittsburgh, Morgantown, North Carolina Tennessee border, Oregon/Washington

Examples Brigette showed us that I admired.
