What the purpose of life?

This is a question that many people have spent all their lives trying to figure out the answer. And I want to take the moment of look at from the perspective of someone who currently going through college. When you’re in college I feel like you heard people around you who have figure out what their purpose in life. Many people believe that they are here to serve God will, while the others believe that we were put on here.

And then there people like myself, who are trying to figure out what our purpose in this world. I grew up in a very traditional Muslim household. If you were to ask my parents of what they believe their purpose in life they would said to serve God will. But I ask myself is that all there is to life? Thinking about it we human live to be about 70ish and then we diminished back to the ground. At that point, our existence in this world is gone. Looking at the grand scheme of the timeline of the universe we are just a speck in that timeline. I wasn’t content with the idea that the life that we live is just for nothing.

And I kept on searching for this meaning of life. It wasn’t until my senior year of my high school where I think I got a hint of the meaning of life. During my spring break, I went to India and I visit this city in Ajmer. This city holds a Muslim Shrine, and pretty much this city income is based on tourist who comes to visit this city. As we drove in the city, I noticed the people on the street. And I look around and you see some people who don’t have arm and legs. This is one of the depressing moment in my life. As I walk around the city, I’m wondering what these people consider their purpose of life. And I had all these ideas and from talking to these people. I got a sense of where these people came from and what they believe that is important in their life. After I visit the city I didn’t know how to process what I saw. The information was so great that it wasn’t until my sophomore year of college did I finally process of what I saw.

And I realized that we all come from different background and we as human will never reach the same conclusion of what the meaning of life. The experience of life determines what we believe our purpose of life. And as a college student, I feel we have this mentality that after we are done with college that our definition of the purpose of life is just static. But from my observation it the experience that we go through in life that defines what our purpose in life. And if you ask what I think my purpose is life at this moment. I would have said for right now, the purpose of life is embracing the happy moment with people who care about me, and making the world a happier place because I existed.

The last thing I want to say is that if you don’t know the purpose your life. It’s fine that you don’t know. Don’t let society tell you that you need to come up with the answer. This is your life and you have to take this journey of figure out what it is. And sometimes we fail in life and that okay. You may not think it’s helping you right now. And let me tell you I have been failing all my life. But I promise you will learn from it and help you better understand your purpose. I end this, with something that aunt said to me when I growing up. “Life is full of mystery but what you learn from it is the greatest investment of a lifetime”
