Constructing the Bridge

Banu Subramaniam is a woman of science. As a woman of science it is known to be a discouraged and difficult feat for women in all stages of their academic career. This could be conceived by the ideals of your peers, the environments we reside in, or the doubts that have been fostered for years due to earlier principles diminishing the ability of women. In chapter 9 of Ghost for Darwin, Epstein’s piece on lay expertise, and Fujimara&Luce’s text on authorizing knowledge they all discuss the construction of authority in the world and how the perception of authority is valued more than wielding honesty when presenting the self.

Subramaniam also expresses the great experience she had in a supportive group of women in science and engineering. So in a way of combining the authorization of ideals and the feminist bashing of exclusive patriarchal ghost I found an article that analyzed or critiqued the movement of women in the sciences posting on Instagram as a way of promoting a new perception of women scientist.

The writer, Meghan Wright, reflects on her reaction to a female scientist’s Instagram page. Wright describes the page as transforming scientific processes into an appealing, fun, and easy to understand manner. Wright also notes how the scientist is posting cute/trendy selfies and lab equipment with cute emojis. The Instagram posts are to help dispel stereotypes of women in the scientific fields as well as reach out to females of all ages as a way of getting them to feel less disheartened about the STEM field.

Wright continues to reflect on the bitter reaction she had to the overall positive Instagram post of this female scientist. She states that the bitterness she feels is for the fact that women have made Instagram a platform for combating the male-dominated field. The positive spin of this unfortunate situation is that more female scientist spend more time advocating their support for the pursuit of science for all, constantly demonstrating the inclusivity that the future is working to foster for women and other minorities.
