Don’t let procrastination erode your income

Everyone procrastinates occasionally. This year, many of us have seen our motivation erode as more and more obstacles and challenges were thrown at us. 2020 is a year for the record books, and one we all wish was over.

While procrastination is understandable, especially now, if we find ourselves doing it more and working less, we can damage our business because we’re doing more than postponing a task to some vague tomorrow. We’re also postponing the results we need for long-term success and profits. Not doing a task today can mean less income tomorrow. Here are some methods for shaking lose from procrastination and getting back in the groove.

Vilfredo Pareto was a 19th century economist who studied the distribution of wealth in Italy. He discovered that 80% of the wealth was held by only 20% of the population. Subsequent research has supported the theory that the majority of outputs are the result of a much smaller percentage of inputs, generally, 80/20. For business people, it means that most of the results we need will come from approximately 20% of our efforts. Our ability to do this effectively comes from directing our actions on the tasks that produce most of the results we need. Applying the Pareto Principle shows us where we need to focus our efforts and where procrastinating is dangerous.
