With our sleep schedule completely whacked, this time, the assignment of motel door beater switched. It was like being a kid during school when a parent flipped on the overhead and told you to get your butt out of bed.

When I opened the door, my partner was standing there, a notebook in one hand a cup of coffee in the other.

“You decent?”

“Define decent.”

“At least tell me you have your pants on.”

“Oh, okay, I’m decent. Come on in. I gotta go to the bathroom. Will you brew me a cup?”

“What time is it?”

“Almost six.”

“Damn. I guess you’ll be wanting to hit the trough pretty soon.”

“Bite my ass, James. I’ve already eaten thank you very much.”

“Well, I haven’t. Is the restaurant open?”

“Not till six-thirty. Which gives us plenty of time to go over what Donnie and Becca discovered.”

“Fine. Shoot.”

“Henry, we were right, but not right about the who.”

“Oh, for the love of God, Johnson. I haven’t even woken up yet. Can you not just give me all the info instead of spoon-feeding it to me?”

“Fine, Mr. Crotchety. Okay, Becca and Donnie did exactly what we asked. They pulled up a list of candidate filings for the Fort Worth mayoral races of ninety-one and ninety-two. Two filed in early August of ninety-one, three in November of the same year, and two in January of ninety-two.”

“Okay, if I wasn’t before, I’m flummoxed now. What election year was this for?”
