Newspapers In Gasconade County

This was a Hermann publication. The only notable articles other than the typical obituaries and property sales were articles about Mormonism. The entire article is in German, but it was published in 1844. I am able to decipher Joseph Smith (whom the religion is based on) as well as “The Book of Mormon.” There are about 5–6 notable articles from the Missouri State Historical Society website that are pulled from the publication to discuss the Mormon faith. There are no advertisements or photos included in the newspaper, rather just slightly larger text to separate the articles for the title. This shows that newspapers were used solely for distributing information and the writers tried to pack as much information into the papers as possible. It’s intended audience is the population of Hermann for general news as well as potential religious persuasion/information. Though an issue is completely about the new Mormon religion, it is hard to tell if the other issues are just simply a local newspaper.

Owensville Argus

This newspaper is definitely more of a locally-centered newspaper. It has advertisements for shoes, underwear, toys, patents, and candy. The advertisements also have images and logos. They have a county correspondence section where each reporter in the county reports on their specific assignment. Most of the county articles start off with “news is scarce around here” and go on to mention fishing trips, new marriages, farming, and hunting. The paper discusses town hall meetings and has meeting notes for every decision that was made. Some sections still remain in German, especially when they talk about court cases within Gasconade county. Everything is at the civil level and talks about people trading farms and getting married, there is not a lot of political leaning. It is obvious that this paper was designed to keep the county up to date with what everyone else in the county was up to.
