The 7 Habits of Highly Empathic People

MODERN SPIRITUALITY

Empathy is not just a feeling but a biological prerogative for survival

Following on from my successful article The 7 Habits of non-narcissistic people, I thought it would be interesting to create a list of the 7 habits of highly empathic people from the perspective of personal growth.

As the conversation about narcissists, there’s a lot of articles about Empaths, but what traits do empaths have, and what are their habits?

My personal definition of empathy is an ability to feel or sense the energy of others outside of our personal energy field, or personal space.

Empathy is thought to be sensed when our mirror neurons fire, in response to sensing a resonant state in someone else.

At the simplest level, think about a cute pet video, if you have a pet of your own or want one, and you might get a warm feeling or a sense of emotional expansion in the chest. That’s one example of empathy.

A similar mirror neuron response is when a baby gives you that unexpected gummy smile. You smile back, you can’t help yourself!

Scientific study is starting to expand our frame of reference around empathy, which for many years was considered to be a purely human phenomenon.

Animals from chimps to elephants have been observed and recorded as displaying empathy when fellow animals feel pain or even die within their family groups.

One member of the group may also be more sensitive, and able to know when a lion might decide to charge before the other members of a group or herd have noticed. This behavior has been observed within herds of wildebeest, for example.

What about human empaths, what are our most common traits?
